From a Mountain to a Molehill

ORS began crushing separated glass over two years ago and has now crushed more than 300 tons. That is glass that does not need to be shipped off island, and stays here to be used in projects. In fact, we are still asking customers to take the Orcas Glass Challenge to see what innovative way they can use the crushed glass – all you need to do is take a couple of photos and write a paragraph or two so others can replicate, modify, or build on your project ideas.

The title of this short article refers to what has happened this summer to our pile of crushed glass. We wondered how big it would get, and then one day it had “shrunk” as you can see in the two photos. Islanders are finding uses for it. We received one user’s description for how they used the crushed glass as a base for a brick patio kit, including their process and directions so you can adapt it easily. Others are using the glass for various art projects. While some users have warned against possible sharp pieces (it is glass after all), we have found that it seldom cuts. Wearing gloves and eye protection when you handle it is a good precaution, though.

We know that separating glass and crushing it has been a good commitment, and encourage you to continue the habit.
