Battery Recycling is About Safety
At The Exchange we have been recycling all types of batteries for a decade. But it’s getting both more important, and will soon be required by law.
The reason it’s becoming more important is for safety reasons: the proliferation of lithium-ion batteries has led to a growing number of garbage fires all over the country.
Because of the fire hazard the City of Seattle has already mandated battery recycling. They have done so after experiencing no less than 79 fires over the past 2 years.
San Juan County is also considering a recycling mandate that would start before the state-wide law takes effect. At The Exchange we are asking that everyone recycle all their batteries by dropping them off at the scale house for a small fee. Vehicle batteries are free, and all others are $2/pound.
FUTURE NEWS: As of January 1, 2027, all batteries must be recycled as per Washington State Law (RCW 70A.555). This is a great law, and like our electronics and paint recycling programs it will be free to drop off your batteries.
