At The Exchange we have been recycling all types of batteries for a decade. But it’s getting both more important, and will soon be required by law.

More important for safety reasons: the proliferation of lithium-ion batteries has led to a growing number of garbage fires all over the Country.

As of January 2027, all batteries must be recycled as per Washington State Law (RCW 70A.555). This is a great law, and like our electronics and paint recycling programs it will be free to drop off your batteries.

San Juan County is also considering a recycling mandate that would start before the state-wide law takes effect. At The Exchange we are asking that everyone recycle all their batteries by dropping them off at the scale house.
