Fluorescents Recycle FREE!
Since January 2015 The Exchange has been accepting all fluorescent tubes and CFLs (the curly bulbs) for proper recycling at no charge!
This is really great, because these bulbs contain mercury, a highly toxic substance–and many of them are getting smashed in the garbage, and dumped in the landfill untreated. And remember–our landfill is 7,000 feet away from the Columbia River!
Thanks to a State law passed in 2010, lightbulb manufacturers must now pay to properly recycle all mercury-containing lights. Why did it take five years for the law to go into effect? Why because the lightbulb manufacturers fought it for five years of course! For more info on program, click here.
