ORS Separating Cardboard
Orcas Recycling Services has taken a major step in how we recycle and has been running a pilot program for separating cardboard from other recyclables.
Cardboard represents 40%-50% of the recycling stream on Orcas, it is a material with real value, but unfortunately it is often contaminated when mixed with other recyclables—especially glass.
We welcome volunteer ‘docents’ who can assist customers at the drop-off point to instruct and offer explanations on how to sort their recycling properly.
If you would like to help out, please contact volunteer coordinator Jim “Duff” Duffield at duff@exchangeorcas.org or 360-376-3032.
Docents will be asked to work one or more shifts in the 5-week period, and shifts will be from one to three hours. We will be as flexible as possible, and the more trained docents we have, the fewer shifts will need to be filled by any one person. We look forward to your assistance!
