Wanted: Student Intern Docents

Our volunteer docents at the recycling or “Z” wall sincerely believe in the value of what they area doing each week and we are always eager to recruit new volunteers!

A major part of the ORS operation is to effectively and efficiently recycle all that can be recycled. Often the public does not understand the “how”, let alone the “why” of how we recycle here on Orcas. We find that having a docent at the recycling bins (what we call the Z-wall) makes a lot of difference in how well recycling is done. Customers have someone to answer their questions, and we wind up with less contamination in the recycling bins.

We are currently seeking students (adults are also welcome!) who are interested in educating and guiding the public as intern docents under the mentorship of adult experienced docents. The commitment is a short one to two hour shift (each week, or once or twice a month). The transfer station is open to the public Thursday through Monday 10am-4pm, so weekend volunteer work is also available.

And besides earning community service hour credits, student interns will learn about and educate on the hows and whys of recycling on Orcas.

If you (or someone you know) are interested, please contact Duff at tpiduff@hotmail.com.
