Beach Cleanup at Eastsound Waterfront Park

After a successful, and eye-opening, series of beach cleanups last summer, The Exchange is calling on the community to help at The Eastsound Waterfront Park Beach this Saturday, June 14th from 11am to 1pm.

At first glance, our beloved waterfront park beach may look pristine, but a closer look tells a different story. The beach is covered in microplastics, tiny fragments of plastic that are less than 5mm in size.

During last year’s cleanups, we found hundreds of nurdles – tiny plastic pellets about the size of a lentil, used to manufacture plastic products. We also found a variety of plastic items such as bottle caps, shotgun shells, fishing line, and more. There were even layers where it appeared the plastic had broken down into smaller particles that were almost impossible to pick up.

This series of beach cleanups isn’t just about picking up trash. Our goal is to spread awareness and educate our community about microplastics. Let’s inspire each other to take action!

Please join us on Saturday, June 14th; Saturday, July 19th; and Saturday, August 23rd from 11am – 1pm at The Eastsound Waterfront Park. Gloves and tools will be provided.
