Why Compost?

When waste is sent to landfill, air cannot get to the organic waste. As the waste breaks down, it creates methane, a harmful greenhouse gas that greatly contributes to climate change. However, when this same waste is composted above ground at home, oxygen helps the waste to decompose aerobically and hardly any methane is produced as a result. This is good news for the planet! As a bonus, after nine to twelve months, you get a free fertilizer for your garden and plant pots to keep them looking beautiful.

At ORS/The Exchange, we currently only accept yard/forest waste for composting, but that doesn’t mean you can’t compost your kitchen waste at home. Here’s a helpful infographic to get you started!
