Hazardous Waste got Cleaned up too!
Over 60 households brought in hundreds of pounds of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) to ORS on Saturday May 6th. From thermometers full of mercury to garden chemicals and pesticides, to solvents and cleaning supplies to gasoline. Hundreds of pounds of nasty stuff came in, and all of it will now be recycled or safely disposed of.
Special thanks to ORS Board Members Jim Duffield and Jon Gratch for volunteering at the event!
Free HHW cleanups in San Juan County are paid for grant funds from the State of Washington and matched by funds from San Juan County.
Every summer the County’s Department of Environmental Stewardship organizes HHW cleanups on all the major islands. Orcas was first this year. San Juan Island will hold a collection event on May 19-20; Lopez on June 3. More info on those events can be found here.
